InfraSalience is an air pollution remediation technology company with hubs in South Africa, UK and the US. InfraSalience is currently bringing its modular carbon capture and utilisation solution producing sustainable chemicals to the market.
The Challenge –
An integrated carbon-capture demonstration plant on a commercial food production site has been used to gather data over thousands of operating hours, but regular flow interruptions, the inherent transient nature of the mass and energy flows, and the complicated chemical interactions made accurate interpretation of the data difficult, if not near impossible.
The Solution –
Dynamet Insights was contracted to build digital twins of the different plant sections, starting off with the modelling and simulation of the low-level molecular interactions, from where the models were systematically built up and calibrated to the key unit-process block behaviour of the plant, and then to a level where the techno-economics of the process could be assessed on a dynamic basis in the future. This hybrid methodology combines the best features of both the first-principles and data-science approaches.
The Benefits –
The dynamic digital twins developed by Dynamet Insights have been instrumental in getting significantly more value from the demonstration plant data and digitally capturing the complex effects that are key to the operability of the process. The vision is to roll out commercial-scale versions of these digital twins in the future to accompany, and provide better operating strategies and process control at each site-specific installation.
